May 2006 The West's demand for Cassiterite is fuelling the killings in Congo. Militias rely on slave labour to extract the ore, forcing locals to work in sub-human conditions. "Once you get down there, there's no air", describes one worker. "The rocks often bury us and you have to crawl through the tiny hole, using your fingers to dig." Labourers like him often go unpaid. They're forced to work at gunpoint by militias operating outside the control of the government. "Different armed groups do what they want with the population", laments minister Buta Muiso. But British businessman Ketankumar Kotecha sees nothing wrong in buying casiterite from the militias. "If I didn't do it, someone else would. I am not here as some kind of moral saviour."

EDIT: 11/19/07 Did this song suddenly get popular somewhere or something? I trivially posted this vid like 10 months ago, and lately my inbox is getting spammed with comments, daily. Other than listening to my MP3s, I have only heard this song *once* in public. And that was the uber-crappy Timbaland remix, that some DJ played and decided she'd butcher even further =-/ I haven't heard it on the public radio here (yet), just occasionally on internet radio, like Alternative Addiction. Anyway, was just curious about the sudden attention this song has been getting. The Timbaland version seems to be getting some radio-time somewhere. As much as I hate it, at least it will bring notoriety to the original artists. /rant off =P BTW: If you like the original song, I *highly* recommend checking out the fan-made video by Aaron Platt: http://youtube.com/watch?v=fm0T7_SGee4 I saw his masterpiece many, many months ago when I was uploading the band's original video, and was blown away. Platt's rendition is pure artwork. Check it out. ============================================ A re-mastered version of One Republic's music video for "Apologize". Dubbed over with an mp3 for much better audio quality than the original release, from the band's website.
