Hijab (حجاب) is the Arabic term for "cover" (noun), based on the root حجب meaning "to veil, to cover (verb), to screen, to shelter". In some Arabic-speaking countries & Western countries, the word hijab primarily refers to women's head and body covering, but in Islamic scholarship, hijab is given the wider meaning of modesty, privacy, and morality. The word used in the Qur'an for a HEADSCARF or VEIL is khimār (خمار). QUR'AN The Qur'an instructs Muslims to dress in a modest fashion. Surah an-Nur ayah 31 states: "And say to the believing women that they cast down their looks & GUARD their PRIVATE PARTS & do NOT DISPLAY their ORNAMENTS except what appears thereof, & let them WEAR their HEAD-COVERINGS (khimars) OVER their BOSOMS (jaybs), & NOT DISPLAY their ornaments EXCEPT to their husbands or their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or the male servants not having need (of women), or the children who have not attained knowledge of what is hidden of women; & let them not strike their feet so that what they hide of their ornaments may be known; & turn to Allah all of you, O believers! so that you may be successful.(Qur'an 24:31) In the following verse, Muslim women are asked to DRAW their jalābib (when they go out), as a measure to DISTINGUISH themselves FROM OTHER, so that they are NOT HARASSED. "Those who harass believing men & believing women unjustifiably shall bear the guilt of slander & a grievous sin. O Prophet! Enjoin your wives, your daughters, & the wives of true believers to DRAW their JILBAB OVER them [when they go out]. That is MORE PROPER, so that they may be DISTINGUISHED & NOT be HARASSED. God is ever forgiving & merciful. If the hypocrites & those who have the ailment [of jealousy] in their hearts & the scandal mongers of Madinah do not desist, We will rouse you against them, & their days in that city will be numbered. Cursed be they; wherever found, they would be seized & put to death. (Qur'an 33:58-61) HADITH The hadith (Arabic plural ahādīth) are traditions concerning the practices of the early Muslim community. The Arabic word jilbab is translated as "cloak" in the following passage. Aisha reported that Muhammad's wives went out at nighttime to open fields in the outskirts of Medina to relieve themselves. Umar bin Khattab said 'Muhammad, ask your ladies to observe veil,'[citation needed] Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: The Prophet said: Allah does NOT ACCEPT the PRAYER of a WOMAN who has REACHED PUBERTY UNLESS she WEARS a VEIL. (Sunnan Abu Dawud 2:641) Narrated Aisha, Ummul Mu'minin: Asma bint Abu Bakr, entered upon the Apostle of Allah wearing thin clothes. The Apostle of Allah turned his attention from her. He said: O Asma', WHEN a WOMAN REACHES the AGE of MENSTRUATION, it does NOT suit her that she DISPLAYS her parts of body EXCEPT this & this, & he pointed to her FACE & HANDS. (Sunnan Abu Dawud 32:4092) Narrated Umm Salama Hind bint Abi Umayya, Ummul Mu'minin: WHEN the VERSE: "That they should cast their outer garments over their persons" was REVEALED, the women of Ansar CAME OUT as if they had crows OVER their HEADS by WEARING outer GARMENTS. (Sunnan Abu Dawud 32:4090) Narrated Safiya bint Shaiba: 'Aisha used to say: "WHEN (the VERSE): "They should draw their veils over their necks & bosoms," was REVEALED, (the ladies) cut their waist sheets at the edges & COVERED their FACES with the cut pieces." (Sahih Bukhari 6:60:282, Sunnan Abu Dawud 32:4091) Narrated Anas ibn Malik: I know (about) the Hijab (the order of veiling of women) more than anybody else. Ubay ibn Ka'b used to ask me about it. Allah's Apostle became the bridegroom of Zaynab bint Jahsh whom he married at Medina. After the sun had risen high in the sky, the Prophet invited the people to a meal. Allah's Apostle remained sitting & some people remained sitting with him after the other guests had left. Then Allah's Apostle got up & went away, & I too, followed him till he reached the door of 'Aisha's room. Then he thought that the people must have left the place by then, so he returned & I also returned with him. Behold, the people were still sitting at their places. So he went back again for the second time, & I went along with him too. When we reached the door of 'Aisha's room, he returned & I also returned with him to see that the people had left. Thereupon the Prophet hung a curtain between me & him & the Verse regarding the order for (veiling of women) Hijab was REVEALED. (Bukhari 7:65:375, Sahih Muslim 8:3334)

You might be aware that the UK is puzzled as to how it should react, forbid or authorize the Niqab. I, myself, am not sure wether the Niqab is only a matter of faith, and I do believe that many women, especially in the UK, wear it by choice. It is a significant choice, an eloquent choice. What is it saying? What is it calling for ? -- if ever you agree to consider that it might be calling for something. What is behind niqab?

This is a command from Allah to the believing women, and jealousy on His part over the wives of His believing servants. It is also to distinguish the believing women from the women of the Jahiliyyah and the deeds of the pagan women. The reason for the revelation of this Ayah was mentioned by Muqatil bin Hayyan, when he said: "We heard -- and Allah knows best -- that Jabir bin `Abdullah Al-Ansari narrated that Asma' bint Murshidah was in a house of hers in Bani Harithah, and the women started coming in to her without lower garments so that the anklets on their feet could be seen, along with their chests and forelocks. Asma' said: `How ugly this is!' Then Allah revealed: وَقُل لِّلْمُؤْمِنَـتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَـرِهِنَّ (And tell the believing women to lower their gaze) meaning, from that which Allah has forbidden them to look at, apart from their husbands. [Some] scholars said that it is permissible for women to look at non-Mahram men without desire, as it was recorded in the Sahih that the Messenger of Allah was watching the Ethiopians playing with spears in the Masjid on the day of `Id, and `A'ishah the Mother of the believers was watching them from behind him and he was concealing her from them, until she got bored and went away. وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ (and protect their private parts). Sa`id bin Jubayr said: "From immoral actions.'' Abu Al-`Aliyah said: "Every Ayah of the Qur'an in which protecting the private parts is mentioned means protecting them from Zina, except for this Ayah -- (and protect their private parts), which means protecting them from being seen by anybody.'' وَلاَ يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلاَّ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا (and to draw their veils all over their Juyub) means that they should wear the outer garment in such a way as to cover their chests and ribs, so that they will be different from the women of the Jahiliyyah, who did not do that but would pass in front of men with their chests completely uncovered, and with their necks, forelocks, hair and earrings uncovered. So Allah commanded the believing women to cover themselves, as He says: يأَيُّهَا النَّبِىُّ قُل لاًّزْوَجِكَ وَبَنَـتِكَ وَنِسَآءِ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ يُدْنِينَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِن جَلَـبِيبِهِنَّ ذلِكَ أَدْنَى أَن يُعْرَفْنَ فَلاَ يُؤْذَيْنَ (O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks all over their bodies. That will be better, that they should be known, so as not to be annoyed) [33:59] And in this noble Ayah He said: وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَى جُيُوبِهِنَّ (and to draw their (Khumur) veils all over their Juyub) Khumur (veils) is the plural of Khimar, which means something that covers, and is what is used to cover the head. This is what is known among the people as a veil. Sa`id bin Jubayr said: وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ (and to draw) means to pull it around and tie it securely. بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَى جُيُوبِهِنَّ (their veils all over their Juyub) means, over their necks and chests so that nothing can be seen of them. Al-Bukhari recorded that `A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: "May Allah have mercy on the women of the early emigrants. When Allah revealed the Ayah: وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَى جُيُوبِهِنَّ (and to draw their veils all over their Juyub), they tore their aprons and Akhtamar themselves with them.'' He also narrated from Safiyyah bint Shaybah that `A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, used to say: "When this Ayah: وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَى جُيُوبِهِنَّ (and to draw their veils all over their Juyub) was revealed, they took their Izars (waistsheets) and tore them at the edges, and Akhtamar themselves with them.'' وَلاَ يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلاَّ لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ ءَابَآئِهِنَّ أَوْ ءَابَآءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَآئِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَآءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِى إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِى أَخَوَتِهِنَّ (and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband's fathers, or their sons, or their husband's sons, or their brothers or their brother's sons, or their sister's sons,) All of these are a woman's close relatives whom she can never marry (Mahram) and it is permissible for her to show her adornments to them, but without making a wanton display of herself. Ibn Al-Mundhir recorded that `Ikrimah commented on this Ayah, وَلاَ يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلاَّ لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ ءَابَآئِهِنَّ أَوْ ءَابَآءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ (and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband's fathers...), "The paternal uncle and maternal uncle are not mentioned here, because they may describe a woman to their sons, so a woman should not remove her Khimar in front of her paternal or maternal uncle.''With regard to the husband, all of this is for his sake, so she should try her best when adorning herself for him, unlike the way she should appear in front of others. أَوْ نِسَآئِهِنَّ

My husband Mohammed and i made this video I want to add for those who have commented on the amount of makeup the women have on in this vid. It was not my intention to promote makeup. The video is about Niqab & these were the only pics I could find at that moment that showed the Niqab without showing another part of the body that should be covered. My intention was to promote the Niqab & the beauty of the Idea of the Niqab. I dont wear makeup myself except for in the presence of my husband. Allah Knows whats inside my heart. By the way, I was in the works of a video showing the Niqab & Hijab without makeup already, I just had to find a source I could get pics without copyright infringement.
