Shiko Mawatu makes "ROSA" look so easy

Here's a well-lit clip of Shiko playing Rosa - gorgeous...you can hear rhythm in the background from THE Lokassa ya Mbongo -- and that is Lokassa giving instructions to Shiko at the end, and Shiko making sounds of agreement... This little clip has gotten a lot of attention because it reveals 'close-up' the very relaxed two-fingered style of plucking that was used by Franco. Shiko Mawatu has been active as a Congolese guitarist since the time of Dr. Nico (with whom Shiko toured) and through the entire age of Franco. Shiko is one of today's leadiing exponents of Franco-style playing. Shiko also utilizes an unusual tuning from time to time -- different from Lokassa's 'mi-solo' tuning, and according to Lokassa that special tuning that Shiko uses is fast vanishing. I have to talk to Shiko and find out more about that special tuning. Lokassa says that Shiko may be the only person left who still plays using that unusual tuning. When I find out more about that I'll post it here.

Franco never used a pick: He played his electric guitar directly with his fingers in a unique style.
