Atheist

11 20th, 2008

Atheists aren't that bad. This is NOT an argument for atheism... It's a defense of atheists. This video received the award for "Excellence in Humanist Communications" from the Harvard University Humanist Chaplaincy. James Randi said this video was "very cool!" Michael Shermer said it was "very impressive." Penn & Teller said, "If a god existed, this video would make him wish he were dead." Dan Barker (author of "Losing Faith in Faith") said it was "very creative and powerful" and that it "makes a GREAT point!" Greg Epstein (the Humanist Chaplain of Harvard University) said "it's a wonderful video!" Stephen Ulh (author of "Imagine No Superstition") said that this video was "just wonderful for the cause of atheism." David Mills (author of "Atheist Universe") said "I am absolutely addicted to watching this fabulous video, which has almost instantly become a legend in the freethought community. Zak has created the most intellectually and emotionally powerful multimedia presentation I've ever seen endorsing the atheist position. This is a proud moment for all rational-minded people. Atheist books can have wide-reaching influence, but I strongly suspect that Zak's video will influence a much larger audience than any atheist book ever published. The first few times I watched this video, I literally had tears in my eyes by the end. The artistic talent and technical skills required to write and produce this video -- as well as its core message -- have made Zachary Kroger my newest freethought hero. I'm not surprised at the HUGE reaction Zak's video has generated." This video (among others) was also mentioned in the November 4th New York Times article "God and Man on YouTube." Nobelief.com said this was "the best video of 2006." NOTE- It has been brought to my attention that Marlon Brando, Mark Twain, and Susan B. Anthony are not atheists. I looked into it, and my original sources were wrong. Sorry. You can download the song used in this video at http://thegodmovie.com/cd.php (track 3) Lastly, I am pleased to see how much debate this video has sparked, and I encourage everyone that wants to, to join in. HOWEVER, spamming will not be tolerated. Nor will racist, sexist, or other mean comments. Such behavior is not conducive to good conversations, and users who do not act accordingly will be blocked. A fantastic lecture by Christopher Hitchens about how atheism (and anti-theism) is not only a healthy belief system but a moral necessity. He talks about the very earthly nature of religion, the dangerous effect it is having on our world and the need for people to think for themselves. Have a drink and get comfortable because Hitchens is going to explain it all to you just brilliantly! Sewanee University, February 23, 2004

Adam Carolla on Atheism

Inspired by extremist Shirley Phelps, Adam Carolla goes on a rant during his radio show about some of the reasons he is an atheist. A genius rant at that.

Videoblogging Week 2007 is Atheism Week on The Mickipedia Show. Day 7: I am an atheist. Video Credits: Video by Micki Krimmel Music by No one and Big Bully

This is is short overview of my life as a Christian and why I became an atheist. This is mainly for those religious people who may state that I do not know what I am talking about, or that I have not studied Christianity in any real depth. Yes - I know I was not "born a Christian" and highlight this fact later in the video. For brevity I made that statement instead of "I was born an atheist in a Christian family and raised with the values, rituals, and conventions inherit in such situations". The popular understanding of the phrase has the meaning I was looking for without having to go into a massive explanation as to why everyone is born an atheist. Besides, if I had gone down that route I would now be defending a "I was born an atheist" comment to all the idiot theists who visit. Furthermore, if anyone make a comment about this again I will give you the thumbs down - if you can't be bothered reading the descriptions of videos, it's your own fault. There is a slight problem with the Youtube version - it cuts off one of two closing slides and the credit for the music, which called "High Drama" from the album "Pictures" by Timo Maas. Atheism for Kids

11 20th, 2008

Thoughts for Tots - Playing the devil's advocate, Mr. Taylor reads a booklet for children published by atheist leader Madalyn Murray O'Hair before she was murdered. The tract is entitled, "Did You Know All the Gods Came from the Same Place?" (The Land of Make Believe Inside Your Head) http://churchofsatan.tv

Rational Response Squad member, The Hillbilly Atheist recently had the chance to give a presentation about atheism at his college deep in the Buy-Bull Belt. Subscribe! - A large convention of atheists gathered today in Virginia, where men, women and children eagerly proclaimed their belief God does not exist. While their views still may be the minority in the country, atheists have become more vocal and visible in recent years. T-shirts, bumper stickers and even rap songs proclaim atheists' beliefs. Atheist summer camps now exist for children. "Over the last 20 years," said Alan Wolfe of Boston College, "the number of people willing to tell people in surveys that they don't believe in God have pretty much doubled." Books denying God's existence have topped bestseller lists, and Congress has its first self-proclaimed atheist, Rep. Pete Stark, D-Calif. "A lot of respectable people are coming out and saying they are very happy to dispel the myths of the Bible," said Margaret Downey of Atheist Alliance International. Some atheists said their profile has increased because of a rise in religious extremism, like the Islamic fundamentalism behind the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 and the rise of the Christian right in the United States. Gathering of the Godless Meanwhile, the Internet has helped unite non-believers. In fact, this weekend's convention sold out, and had a waiting list of 600 people. Besides listening to speakers, convention attendees can buy merchandise like a born-again-atheist hat, atheist-on-board signs for those with kids, or after-the-rapture mints. They also had the opportunity to mingle with celebrity atheists like authors Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins. On "Good Morning America Weekend Edition," Hitchens said American believers should recognize they live in a secular state. "It would be better for them if they didn't give themselves false conciliation," he said. "My challenge is really to say, 'Can you name me a moral action or a statement that has been made by a believer that couldn't have been made by a non-believer?'" And while the stigma associated with atheism may be diminishing, the majority of Americans say they would not vote for an atheist for president. Here, at the 2002 Toronto 'Other Testaments' conference, Derrida responds in audio format to a question about his supposed atheism... 'paradoxically,' he states, the 'true believer experiences atheism' because the object of prayer - God - is 'beyond' the usual metaphysical notions of 'being' (e.g., presence, essence, ouisa) - thus, to believe in that which by definition is 'beyond being' implies believing *as* an atheist... claiming that one is solely a 'believer' or an 'atheist,' is deemed 'ridiculous' - binary oppositions of this sort engage in a near constant reversibility... within this 'atheism' of the 'believer,' true faith appears (a postmodern rendering of Kierkegaard)...

Why Atheism?

11 20th, 2008

A good way to follow the Evolution video is to give an overview of my position. Remember, I am not claiming that there is no god, only that there is not enough reason to believe that there is. From this perspective, it is only rational to assume that there isn't until shown otherwise. My burden of proof is not to prove that there is no god because I am not claiming such. My only burden is to show continued reason for my scepticism. Music: "Put Your Hands Up" - Benny Benassi

Door to Door Atheist!

Lewis: The new Psychology was at that time sweeping through us all. We were all influenced. We were all concerned about fantasy, or wishful thinking. I formed the resolution of always judging and acting with the greatest good sense. Walter Hooper: He was saying that all youth at that time were trying to escape from wish fulfillment dreams. They got that from Freud. And they wanted to in one way spit on the images of their youth, and go onto they knew not what. But, anyway, leave that behind because it was juvenile. Lewis: I was at that time living like many atheists; in a whirl of contradictions. I maintained that God did not exist. I was also very angry with God for not existing. I was equally angry with him for creating a world. Why should creatures have the burden of existence forced on them without their consent? Lewis: All the books were beginning to turn against me. Indeed, I must have been as blind as a bat not to have seen, long before, the ludicrous contradiction between my theory of life and my actual experiences as a reader. The most religious were clearly those on whom I could really feed. Lewis: I can only describe it as the Great War between Barfield and me. When I set out to correct his heresies, I find that he had decided to correct mine! And then we went at it, hammer and tongs, far into the night, night after night. Duriez: Barfield believed that the imagination plays a very important part in how we know. He rejected the model that science is the only way to truth, to acquiring truth. He felt that the imagination was laid behind even the work of science. It gave meaning to propositions. And so he felt that Lewis was missing out in his whole approach to reality on what made knowledge possible. Peter Kreeft: When Lewis talks about joy, he talks about something that he labels the central theme of his whole life. But what he means by joy is not the satisfaction of a desire, but a desire that is more desirable than any satisfaction. Lewis: There was no doubt Joy was a desire. But a desire is turned not to itself, but to an object. I had been wrong in supposing that I desired for Joy itself. All value lay in that of which Joy was the desiring. The naked other. Unknown, undefined, desired. I did not yet ask "Who is desired?" Kreeft: The very experience of Joy that Lewis had was an arrow that led to the target of belief in God. Lewis argued innate, deep desires do not exist unless they correspond to something that can satisfy them. If there is hunger, there is food. If there is sexual desire, there is sex. If there is curiosity, there is knowledge. So if there is the desire for this thing that is beyond this world, there must be something beyond this world. Lewis: The fox had now been dislodged from the wood and was running in the open, bedraggled and weary, the hounds barely a field behind. The odd thing was that before God closed in on me, I was in fact offered what now appears to be a moment of wholly free choice. I was going up Headington Hill on the top of a bus. Without words, and almost without images, a fact about myself was somehow presented to me. I became aware that I was holding something at bay. I felt myself being given a free choice. I could open the door or keep it shut. I chose to open. I felt as if I were a man of snow at long last beginning to melt. Drip-drip. And presently trickle-trickle. I had always wanted, above all things, not to be interfered with. I had wanted — mad wish — to call my soul my own. I had been far more anxious to avoid suffering than to achieve delight. You must picture me alone in that room at Magdalen, night after night, feeling, whenever my mind lifted even for a second from my work, the steady, unrelenting approach of Him whom I so earnestly desired not to meet. Total surrender, the absolute leap in the dark, were demanded. I gave in, and admitted that God was God ... perhaps, that night, the most dejected and reluctant convert in all England.
