http://www.ted.com - In Al Gore's brand-new slideshow (premiering exclusively on TED.com), he presents evidence that the pace of climate change may be even worse than scientists were recently predicting, and challenges us to act with a sense of "generational mission" -- the kind of feeling that brought forth the civil rights movement -- to set it right. Gore's stirring presentation is followed by a brief Q&A in which he is asked for his verdict on the current political candidates' climate policies and on what role he himself might play in future.

Comments to “Al Gore: New thinking on the climate crisis”
  1. Merci Says:
Well said again Al! Too many voters made such a sad mistake back in 2004. Do any of them feel guilty for the unnecessary deaths of hundreds of thousands and the accelerated degradation of our habitat? They should. But, looking forward, there's a lot to be done and we will have honest leadership with a respect for science. FINALLY! WeCanSolveIt(dot)org
  2. Alexandra Says:
Oh hell no you did not just call atheists agnostics. There is a world of difference between most of them.
  3. Malvin Says:
The logic here is paper thin. Gore argues rises in sea level of several feet if this continues, yet, he then shows HALF an ice shelf gone. Yep, that's half of Greenland gone you guys see according to his slides. So half of what he says will take place should already have taken place. The beach houses are still standing folks. Even if it's seasonal, would you be able to live on or enjoy the beach if it rose and fell by several feet per year?
  4. QUTUZ Says:
First of all, agnostic here. There's no such thing as an Atheist. All atheists are just agnostics. If an atheist saw definate proof of god he would surely change his worldview. Second. I'd have no problem with Al Gore being the face of taking care of the planet if he'd acknowledge the real problem. Too many people. We need about 3 billion less instead of counting on technology to keep up. 2-3 generations of 1 child per couple would acheive that. Worldwide. Pipe dream mainly.
  5. TOLMAN Says:
Snerkable is wrong. Both hemispheres are in big trouble. CO2 levels in the atmosphere are climbing and soon will be double it's highest ever amount. People get your head out of your ass. If the pump that makes the global, deep, cold water, currents move shuts off, our ability to grow food and have clean water will be cut to insufficient levels. We will see poverty and death that makes our current recession look like paradise. It will happen to US, the people living now.
  6. Margo Says:
Man it must be KILLING you atheists that the leading figure in the enviromental movement is a Baptist.
  7. Branhard Says:
And we still don't know where he got the other $290 m. of that $300 million to carry on the good work promoting this stuff. Could't have anything to do with that new inductee into the Green Energy Club, little Mr. Nuclear, could it?
  8. Morgan Says:
So if I showed a slide show that depicted snow in L.A. and then said it has never snowed in L.A. in over 30 years, and then said we're in for a global ice age would you believe me? No. Same with the arctic, gosh it had one bad year, and yes the past few years it's been getting warmer - but what about the southern hemisphere where most of the ice is concentrated? It's actually been expanding in the past 30 years.
  9. CHANDA Says:
really bad slides. alarmist images that don't show anything specific. it says:AAAARRGH, but--what does it mean exactly? the image of the earth especially goes to people's feelings rather than rationality. it's just catchy, but let's tlak about global warming really seriously. let's have some real experts showing us some real slides.
  10. Judas Says:
don't you feel something strange when Al Gore is speaking? it's like---what is he talking about afterall? it's like bla bla and preaching! and showing the ice melting isn't proving it's caused by humans. temperatures were much warmer in the middle ages, and much colder in the 17th century. that's natural, random variations--and we don't know if it's the sun or other factors within earth itself. we don't really know. that's why it's ot a top priority. CO2 doesn't affect the warming that much.
  11. Berenice Says:
Look, I realize that methane is a very strong green house gas and that not eating meat thus not feeding the meat market, is helpful to curb global warming. But you can't expect Al Gore to change his own lifestyle so dramatically. I believe that he's doing what he can. I believe that he's done far far more than anyone else in the world, for effectively changing views about global warming and spreading awareness. If that is his purpose, than I accept him for that. Now please leave me alone!
  12. BETTINA Says:
lol. I am happy you dont take it the wrong way...Look, most of the historical people I have read about, if you think carefully, do not deserve much praise. Here are some factoids: Ghandi delayed the independence of his country 10 years, Einstein may have cheated from others, and Mother Theresa de Jesus was atheist thelast years oflife, Washington had slaves,Lincoln said that the Constitution prohibited the federal government from abolishing slavery in states where it already existed and so on...
  13. Gideon Says:
:O being a good Christian and not believing in Jesus makes no sense...to me at least. I'm just bashing Gore because I'm doing a presentation bout him and I kinda instinctively hate him too (him being smug a politician and all).
  14. ADAMINA Says:
Many people in the world get away with things, this includes science too, sad but thats the way it is. I know for a thing that there is no Jesus, yet I am a good X-tian, contradiction?. My friend, the world is filled with contradictions.
  15. D'arcy Says:
I have no idea if he lied or not, the only thing I know is that in scientific matters I never quote him...he is not a doctor in science and he did not get the prize in chemistry, he is a speaker who is famous because he was vicepresident, if the noise he makes serves to attract attention, fine. If you want to get someone why not indicting someone who made certain country go to war?
  16. Min Says:
So it doesn't matter that he made false statements, lied, and manipulated facts because he got the Nobel Peace Prize?
  17. Wirt Says:
He Got a nobel prize shared with lots of people...if you want to rant against someone get contact information for polluting industries and write to them
  18. Wulfhere Says:
He makes false statements throughout the movie and gives AGW a bad name.
  19. Guiseppina Says:
I'd say, whatever it takes to convey the idea. Energy policy must change!
  20. DINADAN Says:
paid by Exon et al of course. I work in climate change and have a PhD in the area. A scientist in a conference challenging global warming is viewed with suspicion (or laughter)
  21. Marquilla Says:
How am I choosing a small detail and blowing it out of proportion? I'm not nitpicking, why does he use demagogic measures and why doesn't he himself embrace an environmental lifestyle? He is a hypocrite. Do you think it's alright to decieve people in order to make the movie more effective?
  22. JWAHIR Says:
I would like to know what steak you have in people not trusting Al Gore. You seem to choose the smallest details and try to make them seem like huge deals. We know now that if the polar ice caps melted completely, the ocean probably wouldn't rise 20 feet. It would rise considerably though. And once that happens, the earth would become increasingly warmer each year, unless we do something. The movie was affective. How many now know about the crisis who didn't before? And how many are acting?
  23. Art Says:
So erroneous data is justified as long as he's calling people to action? He is spreading lies, even strong supporters of AGW are critical of him and with good reason. His attempt at calling people to action through the movie was not really successful especially when you consider the fact that he never advised people to abstain from meat(he is himself not a vegetarian).
  24. Charlynn Says:
    Crazy fanatic.
  25. Taavi Says:
You know what? If I were him back then, when everyone and their dog thought he was crazy, but I knew I wasn't and the truth was that the entire planet was at risk; I'd use startling imagery too, in order to move people to action. That's a very big part of what the documentary is about. The call to action. You must be blind if you don't see that.
