Comments to “Coney Island of the 1940's”

January 7th, 2009 at 18:26:58 Anybody know what the ride was named or what type of ride was between 3:33-3:38?
January 7th, 2009 at 18:49:57 thanks for posting this also: you are really right ("if 1940's Coney Island existed today an insurance agent would have a field day.").....I remember riding on the "horses" right out over the water (or almost); safety was Not a factor in building them!!!! also, if it weren't for Coney Island, I probably wouldn't be here----my parents met each other there---e step above a 'pick-up') from what I understand...we had a family friend who ran the Wonder Wheel, so we got to go round TWICE forFREE
January 7th, 2009 at 19:12:56 rockynellie, Coney is far from a ghost town and there are no Ferris wheels there. The Cyclone and the Wonder Wheel are historic classics. They're not going anywhere. Thor's plans to bring condos and retail to Coney have failed. Yeaa! The City stepped in to help prevent a monopoly. Orallarry, the coasters, two of at least 10 to have operated on the Island, are the Cyclone (early footage) and (I believe) the side-friction Mile Sky Chaser.
January 7th, 2009 at 19:35:55 Thanks so much for posting this The film never mentioned how many coasters Coney had in it's heyday. I think Five. I am pretty sure the one shown in video is Not the Cyclone. The simple but dazzling wonders of Coney Island will never be part of American Culture again. More's the pity.
January 7th, 2009 at 19:58:54 Do you believe those rides! I guess the lawyers were still working there way thru school!!
January 7th, 2009 at 20:21:53 coney island is being turned into condos. and no they arent ripping down the cylcone. its a landmark and is protected. coney island is a place overrun with trash and trashy people and many many russians. not what it used to be or what you see here

January 7th, 2009 at 21:53:49 it will be gone soon
January 7th, 2009 at 22:16:48 It's a ghost town. Nothing there except a roller coaster, a ferris wheel and the boardwalk. It's gone!

January 8th, 2009 at 23:48:44 LOL...that ferris wheel is INSANE! Must have been scary as fuck.
January 8th, 2009 at 00:11:43 I'll always be grateful I got to go to Steeplechase Park as a kid with its its impressive glass building (reminiscent of the Crystal Palace) , grinning logo face (forerunner of Alfred E. Newman) and ride the cast iron horses on rails! Rides that would never be approved today. Air jets in the floors blasted girl's skirts up and the sounds of brass bands and aromas of carmel corn filled the air.
January 8th, 2009 at 00:34:42 AMAZING VIDEO! We have to stay vigilant and voice out opinions on what we want the new Coney Island to be!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Speak up! If you havn't been in a while GO! September 7th is Astrolands last day!!!! Go before it is all gone!!! You will fall in love with this funtimes mecca! Don't forget the Freakshow Sideshow & museum!!!
January 8th, 2009 at 00:57:41 Cyclone, Tornado, and Thunderbolt were the best rides in the world back in the day. Cyclone is still standing, but Thunderbolt and Tornado both met tragic endings. Coney Island was pardise back in the day, but now it seems like it was a dream that faded with the night. If it was up to me, I would rebuild Coney Island it's former glory.
January 8th, 2009 at 01:20:40 Cyclone, Tornado, and Thunderbolt. They were the best rides back in the day, and I wish Coney Island could turn back to the way it used to be. It used to be paradise, but now it just seems like it was all just a dream that faded with the night.
January 8th, 2009 at 01:43:39 Damn! Disney World! Well There Were Other Factors ,But Still!
January 8th, 2009 at 02:06:38 I was at Coney almost every weekend last summer; it wasn't what it was but still has a very special and unique charm. You can feel the history everywhere, the beach and rides are still there as is a 10 minute walk down the boardwalk to Brighton Beach and a Russian/Euro flavor while enjoying the outdoor cafes overlooking the ocean. Coney's still a very special place, which is exactly why they're going to renovate it while ensuring that the original flavor that's still very much there isn't lost.

January 8th, 2009 at 02:52:36 oh how i wish it was still the same, i live in brooklyn and the coney island now is a run down crappy amusement park with maybe 3 bearable rides. i know they are going to renovate but, itll just become a commercial place that will attract loads of smelly tourists. ill miss coney.
January 8th, 2009 at 03:15:35 That was the best! Thank you!!!!!!!
January 8th, 2009 at 03:38:34 The fat lady in the freak show is pretty ironic as you can't walk down the street today and NOT see one.
