January 7th, 2009 at 19:20:55 Oh Yeah there are countless examples of this ,for me in any Modern media. Learning about Ayn Rand and Objectivism from Bioshock and the Incredibles and learning about Japanese myth from Naruto. Awesome video
January 7th, 2009 at 19:43:54 this is very interesting lol could tangential learning be used in anime aswell im a big anime and video game fan
January 7th, 2009 at 20:06:53 yep, AOE got me interested in history in the first place, and now I am majoring in history with damn good results and showing off time~
January 7th, 2009 at 20:29:52 The Ages of empires games did this with a relatively complete in-game "encyclopedia" about all the nations we can control, tactics, history ect. Interesting.
January 7th, 2009 at 20:52:51 Oh man, I learned so much about the Classical and Medieval Ages from the Age of Empires games. Even up to this day I still remember.
January 7th, 2009 at 21:15:50 I support this kind of idea very much. I do this all the time. For example, because I'm an anime nerd, after finding out certain series were based off of classic chinese books like Romance of the Three Kingdoms, i went out and read the book.
January 7th, 2009 at 21:38:49 another example is pokemon and its breeding system, it got me to understand more about heredity and genes..
January 7th, 2009 at 22:01:48 this is so true...Persona 3 has a sort of encyclopedia in it of all the personas which were inspired my several different myths
January 7th, 2009 at 22:24:47 This is actually a good way to make an game
January 7th, 2009 at 22:47:46 You assumed that I would leave because of learning? You have offended me!
January 7th, 2009 at 23:10:45 i feel smarter already
January 7th, 2009 at 23:33:44 yea ur right, movie saving private ryan made me look after omaha beach, this got me play game medal of honor airborne and for now, i now much about world war 2
January 8th, 2009 at 23:56:43 Exactly! Assassins creed got me interested in the Knights Templar, and i learned that Altair is a star in the Aquila constellation!
January 8th, 2009 at 00:19:42 I suppose it may be a leap to say, but I can attribute my interest in programming to the tangential learning capabilities of video games. In fact, I'm even a Computer Science major solely because I've played video games.
January 8th, 2009 at 00:42:41 Very,VERY well said. I hope to god that he's involved into gamemaking, at least like Yahtzee is, bringing his own awesome ideas into reality by making great, albeit small games. It would be awesome if a game featured something more important, some issue that is important to us in a way like Call of Duty is about World War 2. I've also noticed an interesting thing, the states of Maine, Wyoming, South and North dakota, are permanently stored in my memory, just because of the Red vs Blue webseries
January 8th, 2009 at 01:05:40 man this guy sure knows how to say something really smart KUDOS !!
January 8th, 2009 at 01:28:39 Cool video.
January 8th, 2009 at 01:51:38 It's an interesting concept that I've been exposed to before. It really isn't that bad, and I wouldn't mind if game developers started incorporating little slabs of info into the games.
January 8th, 2009 at 02:14:37 good job 5
January 8th, 2009 at 02:37:36 Valve certainly did it in Half-Life 2. References to dark energy, quantum entanglement, that sort of thing... There are more, but I can't think of them at the moment....
January 8th, 2009 at 03:00:35 this is last thing on the priority list of the devolopers, kinda sad. im pretty sure there is a few people that want to accomplish this.
January 8th, 2009 at 03:23:34 The tangential learning idea put forth here is so true. I was able to do a presentation of medieval siege weaponry almost entirely from playing Age of Empires II; I even used screenshots from the game in my PowerPoint.
January 8th, 2009 at 03:46:33 Hmm. Very good. I hop that game designers put this into their concepts too.
January 8th, 2009 at 04:09:32 Playing Super Smash Bros Melee has introduced me to game theory and competitive gaming as a whole. Sure, not completely useful, but it's still interesting.
January 8th, 2009 at 04:32:31 awesome video, and now I am interested in finding more information about the Sephiroth !
