It is almost Mardi Gras time again in New Orleans & elsewhere. This film takes us back to Mardi Gras 1941 and is in living color. This was the first year a female krewe paraded (Venus) and was the last celebration until after the war. The hot Dixie jazz is provided by George Lewis & Johnny Dodds. So Bon Temps Roule! We have now added a second clip of vintage Mardi Gras celebration: Early 1950's New Orleans Mardi Gras Parade & Crowd Here are some links for those who would like to explore more Mardi Gras history; http://www.mardigrasunmasked.com/mardigras/history.htm http://www.mardigrasdigest.com/html/mardi_gras_history__timeline.htm This site has a great timeline. http://www.mardigrasneworleans.com/mardigrasindians/

Hey it's great the technology we have to put out silent vids with over dubbed sound tracks. What's the band with George Lewis playing that old Buddy Bolden number "Don't Go 'Way Nobody", I never heard that one before. Keep up the good work

Thanks so much for sharing. I was a member of Venus in the 1980s before we disbanded in 1993. The height of the floats is incredible-must have been before St Charles overpass was built. Asking "where are the blacks" they did their own Mardi Gras on the other side of Claiborne with Zulu, Indians (Wild Magnolia tribe) BabyDolls & Skeleton krewes. Awesome to see. Ya'll come visit.
