January 7th, 2009 at 13:58:36 Pavlovian contingency as advanced by Robert Rescorla. the film is a bit outdated. Pavlovian conditioning is recognized today as the learning of S-S (CS-US) learning - not S-R. It also under-represents the importance of Pavlovian conditioning which is always going on. Every instance of operant conditioning is dictated by Pavlovian stimulus control

January 7th, 2009 at 15:07:33 In my opinion there is an error in the film. They clearly show what appears to be sign tracking (aka autoshaping) when the pigeon is pecking the keylight and receiving food. Typically in this design, the food delivery is not dependent on the pecking behavior of the bird. Despite this lack of contingency, the pigeon still pecks at the keylight. Sign tracking has since been shown to be a Pavlovian, not an instrumental contingency. This inaccuracy may be the result of the film's age.

January 7th, 2009 at 16:39:29 Skinner may have had some interesting early experiments but he went on to become the architect of a social engineering philosphy that many have descibed as a form of depotism often called Friendly Fascism. In "Beyond Freedom and Dignity" he argued that freedom and dignity were myths and that an ideal society would be controlled by behaviorists, such as himself, because only they really understood people. Critics include Naom Chomsky and Ann Rand
