Depending on the interpretation, this bit can be either the dramatic climax of the opera or a shamefully awkward moment in an otherwise great performance. So we're going to throw seven great Don Giovannis, new and old, into the pit for the ultimate Don Giovanni death cry CAGE MATCH! And the Leporellos can duke it out as a sideshow!
1: Rod Gilfry (Don Giovanni) and Ildebrando D'arcangelo (Leporello)
2: Cesare Siepi (Don Giovanni) and Otto Edelmann (Leporello)
3: Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (Don Giovanni) and Karl Christian Kohn (Leporello)
4: Tito Gobbi (Don Giovanni) and Erich Kunz (Leporello)
5: Ruggero Raimondi (Don Giovanni) and Jose Van Dam (Leporello)
6: Eberhard Waechter (Don Giovanni) and Giuseppe Taddei (Leporello)
7: Peter Mattei (Don Giovanni) and Gilles Cachemaille (Leporello)
Who's gonna win??

November 18th, 2008 at 21:43:11 Check out the Moll Ramey recording of the final scene. The scream is absolutely fantastic.
November 18th, 2008 at 22:06:10 Come urlo Siepi e Mattei, ma come bravura di Don Giovanni in tutta l'opera, Raimondi!
November 18th, 2008 at 22:29:09 When I saw it at the Met yesterday with Schrott and D'Arcangelo, the staging for this scene was pretty disappointing, but the screams weren't! Schrott sounded like he was saving his voice for the whole opera until he realized he was about to go to hell, and finally his scream was terrifying and reak. And D'Arcangelo actually shouted/sang "NOOOO" in the same ringing bass voice as a pitch, but it worked so well. Also BTW, no one beat's Ildebrando's "Dite di no!" He sounds genuinely horrified.
November 18th, 2008 at 22:52:08 I like it when they sing identically with the trombones.... like the last sample... but that performance didn't persuade for me =/
November 18th, 2008 at 23:15:07 As for Don Giovanni the win goes to Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and for Leporello Van Dam is definitely the best
November 18th, 2008 at 23:38:06 If you wanna hear a bloodcurdling scream. Listen to Thomas Allen's Glyndebourne recording. It's pretty spinetingling.
November 19th, 2008 at 00:01:05 Ok Siepi is good like FiDi. The best Leporello is D`Arcangelo, for me...
November 19th, 2008 at 00:24:04 I like the version of Peter Mattei, Gilfry and the best is Fischer-Dieskau, for me...
November 19th, 2008 at 00:47:03 Raimondi
November 19th, 2008 at 01:10:02 Siepi
November 19th, 2008 at 01:33:01 No contest... Gilfry & D'arcangelo. I will even go so far as to say that Gilfry is perhaps the greatest Don Giovanni of all time. He (Gilfry) captures his (Giovanni) essence, his impulse with such clarity that I'm sure, even Herr Mozart would agree.
November 19th, 2008 at 01:56:00 greve: :P
November 19th, 2008 at 02:18:59 Gilfry and Ildebrando are the best.
November 19th, 2008 at 02:41:58 Siepi, definitely. He's really gonna hell!
November 19th, 2008 at 03:04:57 Siepi's scream sounds like he's being choked by Andre the Giant. So, naturally, he wins the cage match.
November 19th, 2008 at 03:27:56 Sono stati tutti bravi tranne Rod Gilfry, pronuncia male l'italiano. Io lo sò perchè ho quel CD a casa.
November 19th, 2008 at 03:50:55 Yes, you could say so.
November 19th, 2008 at 04:13:54 greve: "By far the worst and most awful: Siepi." I hope that was sarcasm :)
November 19th, 2008 at 04:36:53 By far the worst and most awful: Siepi.
November 19th, 2008 at 04:59:52 This is so absurd!
November 19th, 2008 at 05:22:51 Il migliore è Ruggero Raimondi con Van Dam
November 19th, 2008 at 05:45:50 What a funny idea! As for the Dons I vote for Siepi, as for Leporellos my vote goes for Cachemaille.
November 19th, 2008 at 06:08:49 PS: The WORST ever is Bryn Terfel in the sound recording with Renee Fleming. He just sings the note with no expression whatsoever!
November 19th, 2008 at 06:31:48 Well, I think the best here is Peter Mattei--it sounds the most like a real scream. But I think Thomas Allen in the Conlon conducted DVD has the best scream. It is a real scream, but very defiant. Then Feruccio Furlanetto as Leporello also has the best Leporello scream, because he sounds pathetic and scared.
November 19th, 2008 at 06:54:47 The first DG I ever heard was the Furtwangler Salzberg Fest recording, so I've always thought Siepi was the best... And after hearing the competition here, I STILL think so! IMO this "CageMatch" shows the advantage of a contrast between Giovanni and Leporello's reactions - some of these show Leporello merely repeating Giovanni's "dying fall" of a scream, it's almost comical ("Is there an echo in here?") If ever I hear a scream to surpass Siepi's, you'll be the first to know. Thanks for this!
