November 18th, 2008 at 21:31:10 awesome voice!! I've never heard so wide, so pressing tune. Great!
November 18th, 2008 at 21:54:09 Looking at the score, it's indeed an Andante, but with 2 beats (and not 4); so it seems Gardiner tempo is actually justified ;)
November 18th, 2008 at 22:17:08 I woulda liked to see the orchestra "hidden", out of the way, so to speak.
November 18th, 2008 at 22:40:07 Compendio de la mayor grandeza mozartiana.¡inmenso!
November 18th, 2008 at 23:03:06 AWESOME
November 18th, 2008 at 23:26:05 do you consider me eye candy? im tasty :)
November 18th, 2008 at 23:49:04 Well, Salminen is a good Commendatore as is Moll and Weber...- a somewhat colder more metallic voice and quite strong in his best days, but, no, not really close to Talvela or Silvestrelli in this part what the dramatic aspect is concerned.
November 19th, 2008 at 00:12:03 Indeed, he does. But there are different ways to smile, right ?
November 19th, 2008 at 00:35:02 Oh yeah ? What about Matti Salminen, for example:) ?
November 19th, 2008 at 00:58:01 Personally I like this staging and interpretation, however, Andrea Silvestrelli is the epitomized Commendatore. Only one more bass is on the same level of commanding power, fervor... Martti Talvela in a Karl Böhm performance from 1967 on CD.
November 19th, 2008 at 01:21:00 It's a spasmodic version!! And when Don Giovanni see the commendator...smile (?)
November 19th, 2008 at 01:43:59 LMFAO!!
November 19th, 2008 at 02:06:58 Could you please write more about this performance! I am in love with these singers and with this staging. I bought already another DG with Gilfry, but for me this performance seems to be the very best of the piece. I am so sorry it is not avialable on DVD, and very curius about the whole. So please tell me everithing about it, if you do not mind. How many times was it shown, how was staged the catalogue aria, the serenade, the wedding, the party, everything, everything I want to know. thx
November 19th, 2008 at 02:29:57 May I add this? Tempi, the 'authentic' performance can all be debated, but the whole atmosphere conveyed was of maximum intensity, the most beautiful singing, the semi-staging with he singers very close by, very inventive use of the whole hall, balconies, etc. Note: d'Arcangelo has strangely dropped legato here but his Leporello was also one of the best I ever heard, not to mention amongst others Charlotte Margiono as Donna Elvira and Christoph Pregardien as the most firm Don Ottavio imaginable
November 19th, 2008 at 02:52:56 I attended this performance twice, it has been a life defining moment for me. Note that this is a stage production specially adapted by Gardiner and the cast (without director!) for the great hall of the Concertgebouw Amsterdam. The idea of a chain of singers (and spectators) linking Don Giovanni to the Commendatore and transferring the chilling force which ultimately will drag the Don into... was staggering and soooo effective! The whole performance was Top, more than that, overwhelming.
November 19th, 2008 at 03:15:55 Back to the Future...now this! Amazing...
November 19th, 2008 at 03:38:54 someone needs to stand and kick the commodore in the nuts
November 19th, 2008 at 04:01:53 Brilliant staging, brilliant interpretation, brilliant singing, one of the best ever for me - musically I prefer Harnoncourt's '89 version with the Concertgebouw, but in terms of stage design, this wins easily.
November 19th, 2008 at 04:24:52 One of the most ingenious stagings of this scene I have ever seen. It's possible to see the whole performance??
November 19th, 2008 at 04:47:51 Effeminate ???
November 19th, 2008 at 05:10:50 This guys behind the Commendatore are policemens?

November 19th, 2008 at 05:56:48 Behold the power of opera. It's fearsome.
November 19th, 2008 at 06:19:47 Wonderful interpretation. One of the best I've ever seen (with Rene Jacob's).
November 19th, 2008 at 06:42:46 Pitty the ultra fast tempo...
