Comments to “David Sylvian - Red Guitar”

January 7th, 2009 at 21:12:49 Ha ha love it. I remember when 'The hairy cornflake' played gary numans second solo single 'Complex' on his radio show and commented afterwards "hes gotta be pushibg his luck with that one" LOL! TOTALLY CLUELESS
January 7th, 2009 at 21:35:48 play my red guitar keep my blood flowing
January 7th, 2009 at 21:58:47 I knew of Japan and Sylvain more than I actually knew them. This is wonderful- the music and the video. I guess I wrongly lumped them in, based on photos I saw- in the Face, I guess- with the dime a dozen New Romantic bands crowding the scene. Is Sylvian still active? He sounds as if he can move effortlessly around and through genres.
January 7th, 2009 at 22:21:46 I remember watching this repeatedly on Betamax tape recorded off TOTP. Dave Lee Travis introduced it that night & looked totally bemused by it all. (Well he would wouldn't he).
January 7th, 2009 at 22:44:45 how many times has his voice made a woman singing in her natural voice sing low? Does he really know? Does he really know? Because I've lowered my octaves. For David.
January 7th, 2009 at 23:07:44 I love this song so mcuh and'Taking the Veil" too brilliant they both are and slightly jazzy.
January 7th, 2009 at 23:30:43 Not if they were getting in a bunch of fights.
January 8th, 2009 at 23:53:42 Probably my favourite track on the Brilliant Trees album. My view is that David could still have done this sort of stuff and stayed together with Japan as well.
January 8th, 2009 at 00:16:41 holger czukay :D
January 8th, 2009 at 00:39:40 well, yeah, his solo stuff was too way out for me, but i guess other people might like it...i have a few albums, 'Secret of the beehive' and 'brilliant trees'....hmm, never knew trees could be so brilliant :) yeah, or pheous is a beautiful song, poignant in its way...althugh some of his songs on 'brilliant trees' are somewhat funny...like 'pulling punches', very funky song, reminds me of scritti politti somewhat...
January 8th, 2009 at 01:02:39 Yeah Japan were brilliant and I loved his first solo album but he kinda went too poncy for my liking with a lot of the work after. Too ambient/avant garde like you say. I really liked his Dead Bees on a Cake album though. (Same with Scott Walker, love his early stuff but the rest... forget it!) But check out Sylvian's For The Love Of Life, Orpheus, There's A Fire In The Forest, Let The Happiness In and World Citizen (I Won't Be Disappointed). They're beautiful, I think you'll like them.
January 8th, 2009 at 01:25:38 aww, well, yeah, i agree with you, it's just that some people can be quite pretentious when it comes to art... and what do u think of david sylvian's solo material? for me, it is a bit too avant-garde and he sometimes sounds like scott wlker, which ain't a bad thing...however, i do prefer what he did with japan
January 8th, 2009 at 01:48:37 Bacon? yeah he was Surreal, so see you already know more than you thought you did, and he was a real person too (you're confusion may come from the fact there have been a few Francis Bacons in history; one of which is said to have been the real writer of Shakespeares plays!) There is a film about the artist's life with Daniel Craig as his muse/lover "Love Is The Devil" (1998). It's quite a dark story, but a lot of surrealism is dark, but it definitely expresses his tragic vision of life. :)
January 8th, 2009 at 02:11:36 "sometimes art for me can be a bit beyond my understanding", well, that's true for absolutely all of us on this planet. Some people study it for years and come no closer to "understanding" it. For me good art is art I love and bad art is art I don't like. It's a very personal thing at the end of the day. I don't necessarily understand surrealism, and don't like too much of it, apart from the odd artists or works. But I can see how exciting it was for it's day and still is really.
January 8th, 2009 at 02:34:35 'we're all naive until we learn'...how profound, yes, i agree with what u say...if only i was more into art....sometimes art for me can be a bit beyond my understanding..
January 8th, 2009 at 02:57:34 why, thank you for all this wonderful information, aww, that's very kind of you :)...well, i have heard of dali a lot....was francis bacon also a surrealist (or is the name francis bacon even real?)... umm, i shall look more into the surrealist thought and so on, sounds very exciting...i shall assume that mr sylvian himself likes surrealist art or not?
January 8th, 2009 at 03:20:33 Now if you understand that, lol... Surrealist artists include Dali, Cocteau (my fave check out Blood of a Poet or his Orpheus trilogy of films), Man Ray, Ernst, Roszda, Magritte and many more. There was also surrealist music and the Theatre of the Absurd. I suggest you Wikipedia Surealism and then go from there. There is so much beautiful art to see. I think you'll be surprised just how much you already know and recognise. It was a very exciting time for art. A real spurt in ideas. Enjoy!
January 8th, 2009 at 03:43:32 No worries, we're all naive until we learn. The Surrealists began in the 1920's & were a group of writers/photographers/painters etc who followed the Surrealist manifesto; "pure psychic automatism, by which one proposes to express, either verbally, in writing, or by any other manner, the real functioning of thought. Dictation of thought in the absence of all control exercised by reason, outside of all aesthetic and moral preoccupation".
January 8th, 2009 at 04:06:31 hmm, Surrealist movement...hmm, what does that mean exactly? sorry if i am sounding naive
January 8th, 2009 at 04:29:30 It's all part of the Surrealist movement.
January 8th, 2009 at 04:52:29 oops, i meant 'pulling punches', not 'brilliant trees'....yeah, 'pulling punches', too jazzy for me
January 8th, 2009 at 05:15:28 never knew that anton corbijn directed this video, impressive :) but i don't like the song 'brilliant trees', too funky for me lol he sure is a handsome chap and his hairstyle is lovely
January 8th, 2009 at 05:38:27 I love this song.
January 8th, 2009 at 06:01:26 oh, Angus McBean, never heard of the chap, did assume that you meant angus deayton, but i guess i'm being silly :)
January 8th, 2009 at 06:24:25 It's inspired by a photo by Angus McBean, the old gentleman in the video...
